Welcome
This website was created to keep the community informed about ongoing efforts to investigate and clean up volatile organic compounds (VOCs), specifically the solvent trichloroethylene (TCE), found in soil and soil vapor (chemical vapors between soil particles) at the Market Creek Plaza Shopping Center in San Diego.
Although Market Creek Plaza LLC (MCP), the owner of the shopping center, did not cause the contamination, we have been voluntarily working under the oversight of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) for the past two years to investigate and address the impacts from the contamination at this site. We post regular updates here so you can follow our progress.
Project Snapshot
Market Creek Plaza Businesses: Testing shows that all operating businesses and suites, except Food 4 Less, have no indoor air quality concerns caused by VOC impacts from the historical releases at the property.
Food 4 Less: TCE levels found in indoor air have been reduced through improved ventilation, sealing floor cracks, and installing air treatment units. Quarterly indoor air monitoring shows that some areas are still above regulatory thresholds, which requires further action.
Ongoing Work: We are designing a system to prevent vapors in soil underneath the grocery store from entering the building and anticipate it will be fully operational by mid-to-late 2026.
Off-site Work: Elevated levels of VOCs have been found at the Euclid Terrace Apartments. To address these issues, DTSC is working with that property owner and has engaged Magellan Aerospace, Middletown, Inc. (Magellan) the successor to Fleet Aerospace, whose operations caused the contamination.
