This website was created to keep the community informed about the ongoing work to investigate and remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in soil vapor and indoor air at the Market Creek Plaza Shopping Center in San Diego. Market Creek Plaza LLC (MCP) owns the shopping center but did not cause or contribute to the contamination. Nevertheless, it is voluntarily working under the oversight of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) to perform all necessary investigation and remediation work.
We are in the early stages of investigation work so check back here often for updates.
Project Snapshot
An environmental investigation of the entire shopping center found that indoor air in all suites occupied by stores and restaurants have no indoor air quality issues. Levels of the volatile organic compound trichloroethylene, referred to as TCE, have been significantly reduced in the grocery store by improving air circulation, sealing cracks in the floor, and installing air treatment units. We anticipate installing two systems designed to permanently remove TCE in soil underneath the grocery store this fall with plans to have them fully operational by early 2026.
